INDATA and Easter Seals Crossroads

INDATA and Easter Seals Crossroads

WHAT: Assistive Technology and Cerebral Palsy training sponsored by the INDATA Project at Easter Seals Crossroads

WHEN: Friday, February 19, 2010, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: Easter Seals Crossroads, 4740 Kingsway Drive, Indianapolis IN 46205

WHY: This FREE assistive technology training program is for anyone interested in learning more about the diagnosis of cerebral palsy, the different assistive technology devices available, resources for funding and equipment evaluations.

Assistive technology devices can help accomodate medical issues associated with cerebral palsy, such as difficulty with body movement, learning disabilities, and sight or speech impairments.  These devices are for children and adults with cerebral palsy who want to increase their independence and to make their home, school or work-site more effective, comfortable and enjoyable.

Parents, adult consumers, professionals, educators, and health care providers can benefit from training content.

WHO: Featured speakers include Chuck Dietzen, M.D., Medical Director of Easter Seals Crossroads, along with a representative from United Cerebral Palsy of Indianapolis and professionals in the fields of assistive technology and medical rehabilitation.

In addition, several assistive technology vendors will be present with information on products and services.

HOW:  Although this session is free and open to the public, pre-registration is requested.  Visit http://assistivetechnologyandcerebralpalsy.eventbrite.com/ or contact Sara Croft at 317-466-2013 or 888-466-1314 for more information or to register.

Andrew Goff Presenting on Employment and Autism 125 people registered to attend the Assistive Technology and Autism training on November 19.  It was a free training held at Easter Seals Crossroads for anyone interested in learning more about assistive technology devices for people of all ages with autism.

Our guest speakers were:

  • Scott Fogo, Director of Autism Services
  • Andrew Goff, Assistive Technology Specialist
  • Wendy Gahimer, Augmentative Communication Specialist

Overall the training was well received!  Many people came to learn about assistive technology because they are special education teachers, parents of children with autism, vocational rehabilitation counselors, or other professionals who work directly with people with autism.

Owners of Sensory CrittersThere were three assistive technology vendors present: Tobii ATI, Spec-Tech and Sensory Critters.  Each attendee was able to visit the vendors and receive informational brochures about INDATA’s serivces, our Assistive Technology and Transition from High School pamphlet, and resources from Prentke Romich Company‘s new AAC and Autism Center.  Also available were pamphlets about the Autism Family Resource Center, the Respite Program at Easter Seals Crossroads and an overview of autism services.

INDATA provides four assistive technology trainings each year, and one is in conjunction with the annual assistive technology conference.  If you’d like more information on upcoming trainings, visit the Event Calendar or contact Sara Croft at scroft@eastersealscrossroads.org.
